Sleep Dentistry in Flatiron, NYC

SAMA Oral Health screens for airway and sleep-related concerns as part of comprehensive care, coordinates with physicians, and offers oral appliance therapy to support better sleep and long-term health.

Better Sleep Starts With the Mouth

Jaw structure, tongue position, and airway anatomy are deeply tied to sleep quality — and disordered breathing at night carries real consequences for cardiovascular health, cognitive function, and daily energy. At SAMA, airway and sleep screening is part of how we evaluate every patient, not an afterthought reserved for those who mention snoring. Dentists are often positioned to notice the anatomical signs of airway restriction well before a patient has ever considered a sleep study.

Our approach extends beyond screening alone. An on-site myofunctional therapist works directly with patients whose tongue posture or breathing patterns contribute to airway concerns, addressing the issue at its source. When appropriate, we coordinate directly with a patient’s medical team to facilitate sleep studies and streamline the transition into oral appliance therapy. If sleep quality, snoring, or daytime fatigue have been ongoing concerns, call our office or book an appointment online to explore how sleep dentistry may help.

What Is Sleep Dentistry?

Where Oral Health Meets Better Sleep

Sleep dentistry addresses the relationship between oral and airway anatomy and sleep quality—screening for signs of disordered breathing, such as sleep apnea, and offering treatment options including oral appliance therapy and myofunctional support. Because jaw structure and tongue posture play a direct role in airway function, dentists are uniquely positioned to identify early warning signs that might otherwise go unnoticed.

At SAMA, this evaluation is built into comprehensive care for every patient, reflecting our broader philosophy that oral health cannot be separated from whole-body wellness—and that the quality of a single night’s sleep has real, lasting consequences for long-term health.

Sleep Dentistry FAQs

Understanding Sleep Dentistry & Airway Health

What is sleep dentistry?

Sleep dentistry focuses on the relationship between oral structures, airway health, breathing, and sleep. Dentists can evaluate factors such as jaw development, tongue position, bite, and oral anatomy that may contribute to airway restriction. At SAMA, these findings are considered part of a broader, whole-body approach to oral health and wellness.
The structures of the mouth and jaw help shape and support the upper airway. Jaw position, tongue posture, and other anatomical factors can influence how easily air moves during sleep. When the airway becomes narrowed or obstructed, breathing may repeatedly become disrupted, potentially affecting sleep quality and overall health.
Snoring is one of the most recognizable signs, but it is not the only one. Other potential symptoms can include waking with a dry mouth, morning headaches, restless sleep, nighttime teeth grinding, daytime fatigue, difficulty concentrating, or waking frequently throughout the night. Because these symptoms can have many causes, proper screening and diagnosis are important.
No. Snoring does not automatically mean you have obstructive sleep apnea, but persistent or loud snoring can be a sign that airflow is becoming restricted during sleep. If snoring occurs alongside gasping, witnessed pauses in breathing, morning headaches, or excessive daytime sleepiness, further evaluation may be recommended.

Can a dentist really identify sleep apnea?

A dentist can identify oral and anatomical findings that may suggest an increased risk of sleep-disordered breathing, but a dental examination alone does not diagnose sleep apnea. Dentists are uniquely positioned to evaluate structures such as the jaw, tongue, palate, and bite and may recommend further medical evaluation when signs of airway restriction are present.
An airway-focused dental evaluation considers more than just the teeth. Depending on your concerns, the SAMA team may evaluate jaw structure, tongue position, bite relationships, oral tissues, breathing patterns, and other features that could affect airway function. Your symptoms, sleep history, and overall health history also provide important context.
When obstructive sleep apnea is suspected, a sleep study is generally needed to establish a diagnosis and determine its severity before appropriate treatment can be selected. SAMA can work collaboratively with your physician and other members of your healthcare team to help facilitate this process and determine the appropriate next steps.
Yes. Although snoring is common in people with obstructive sleep apnea, not everyone with the condition snores noticeably. Symptoms such as unexplained daytime fatigue, morning headaches, restless sleep, nighttime teeth grinding, or witnessed pauses in breathing may also warrant further evaluation.
Obstructive sleep apnea repeatedly disrupts normal breathing and sleep throughout the night. Beyond leaving you feeling tired the next day, untreated sleep apnea has been associated with broader health concerns. Identifying a sleep-related breathing disorder allows you and your healthcare providers to determine an appropriate treatment strategy rather than simply managing symptoms such as snoring or fatigue.

What is oral appliance therapy?

Oral appliance therapy uses a custom-designed device worn while you sleep to help maintain a more open airway. Depending on the appliance and individual anatomy, it generally works by repositioning or supporting the lower jaw to reduce airway collapse during sleep. For appropriate patients, it can serve as an alternative to or complement to other forms of sleep apnea treatment.
No. Although both are custom dental devices worn in the mouth, they serve different purposes. A traditional nightguard is generally designed to protect the teeth from clenching or grinding. A sleep apnea oral appliance is specifically designed to influence jaw position and help maintain airflow during sleep.
For some patients, oral appliance therapy may be an appropriate alternative to CPAP, while others may benefit more from CPAP or a combination of therapies. The right treatment depends on factors such as the type and severity of sleep apnea, anatomy, medical history, and treatment tolerance. These decisions should be made in coordination with the healthcare professionals managing your sleep apnea.
Candidacy is individualized. Oral appliance therapy may be considered for certain patients with obstructive sleep apnea, particularly when an appropriately trained healthcare provider determines that it is suitable for their condition. Your diagnosis, airway anatomy, dental health, jaw function, and other clinical factors must all be considered before an appliance is recommended.
Because the appliance is custom-made for your mouth, it is designed to fit securely while you sleep. There may be an adjustment period as you become accustomed to wearing it. Follow-up appointments allow the SAMA team to evaluate fit, comfort, jaw function, and treatment progress and to make adjustments as needed.
When oral appliance therapy is prescribed for ongoing management of obstructive sleep apnea, the device is typically worn whenever you sleep. Your long-term treatment plan depends on your diagnosis and response to therapy, and follow-up care is important to ensure the appliance continues to fit and function appropriately.

What does a myofunctional therapist do?

Myofunctional therapy focuses on the function and coordination of the tongue and muscles of the mouth and face. Therapy may include exercises designed to support appropriate tongue posture, nasal breathing, lip seal, swallowing patterns, and oral muscle function. When appropriate, it may be incorporated into a broader airway-focused treatment plan.
The tongue is closely connected to the structures surrounding the upper airway. Its resting position and function can influence oral development, breathing patterns, and airway mechanics. Evaluating tongue posture can therefore provide useful information when investigating sleep-related breathing concerns.
Teeth grinding can have multiple causes, and in some patients it may occur alongside sleep-related breathing disturbances. Because grinding can also be related to stress, bite factors, medications, and other concerns, SAMA considers it within the context of your broader symptoms rather than assuming a single cause.
An airway-focused dental evaluation can help identify oral or structural factors associated with habitual mouth breathing. Because nasal obstruction and mouth breathing can also have causes outside the scope of dentistry, SAMA may recommend collaboration with other healthcare professionals when appropriate.

How does SAMA determine which sleep treatment is right for me?

There is no single solution for every patient with sleep-disordered breathing. SAMA considers your symptoms, oral anatomy, jaw and bite relationships, dental health, sleep study findings when available, and recommendations from your medical providers. Treatment may involve oral appliance therapy, myofunctional therapy, interdisciplinary care, or another approach based on your individual needs.
Often, yes. Sleep apnea is a medical condition that makes collaboration between dental and medical providers an important part of comprehensive care. SAMA can contribute expertise related to oral anatomy, airway structures, and dental sleep medicine while coordinating with physicians and other providers involved in your diagnosis and treatment.
Feeling better can be encouraging, but symptom improvement alone does not always tell the complete story. Follow-up with your dental and medical providers is important, and repeat sleep testing may be recommended to objectively evaluate how effectively treatment is controlling your sleep-disordered breathing.
SAMA approaches sleep dentistry through the same whole-body lens used throughout the practice. Rather than viewing snoring, grinding, jaw position, breathing patterns, and sleep quality as completely separate concerns; the team considers how these factors may interact and collaborates with other healthcare professionals when appropriate to create a more comprehensive approach to care.

When was the last time you heard someone brag about their dentist? Well buckle up – I have a lot to say.

SAMA Oral Health is truly the best dental experience I’ve ever had. Their beautiful & peaceful NYC studio (honestly, a spa) is just the beginning.

As someone passionate about wellness, I love how Dr. Jaskaren and her team put oral wellness first, while using the most advanced tools (like the GBT cleaning machine, which left my teeth feeling insanely clean).

Everyone from Dani at the front to Brianna (the hygienist — ask her about her most recent travels!), to Kayla and Merssy, is kind, professional, and makes you feel totally at ease. It’s rare to find a dental office that feels this chic, relaxing, and high-tech at the same time. I highly recommend SAMA!
