TMJ & TMD Treatment in Flatiron, NYC

SAMA Oral Health combines advanced diagnostics and regenerative laser therapy to relieve jaw pain, restore healthy function, and address the root cause of TMJ dysfunction.

Relief for Jaw Pain, Rooted in the Cause

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction can affect far more than the jaw, contributing to chronic headaches, facial pain, and disrupted sleep. At SAMA, TMJ treatment begins with understanding the underlying cause, not simply masking the symptom. Through comprehensive evaluation of bite function, jaw alignment, and muscle tension, the SAMA clinical team and Dr. Randhawa identify the specific factors contributing to a patient’s discomfort.

Treatment often incorporates photobiomodulation (PBM), a form of low-level light therapy that works directly on mitochondrial function within cells to reduce inflammation and accelerate healing—offering many patients meaningful relief without medication. If jaw pain, headaches, or clicking and popping have become part of your daily life, call our office or book an appointment online to explore relief that addresses the source of your discomfort.

What Is TMJ/TMD Treatment?

Restoring Comfort and Function to the Jaw

TMJ, or temporomandibular joint dysfunction, refers to a range of conditions affecting the jaw joint and surrounding muscles, often resulting in pain, clicking or popping, restricted movement, and chronic headaches. At SAMA, treatment begins by identifying the underlying cause—whether bite misalignment, muscle tension, or joint dysfunction—rather than addressing symptoms in isolation.

Using advanced diagnostics and therapies such as photobiomodulation, the SAMA clinical team designs a personalized approach to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and restore healthy jaw function over time.

Our TMJ & TMD Services

A Comprehensive Approach to Jaw Pain Relief

Botox for TMJ

Chronic jaw pain, tension headaches, and clenching often come from overactive jaw muscles, not just the joint. At SAMA, targeted Botox injections into the masseter and temporalis ease that muscle tension — reducing clenching, headaches, and jaw soreness.. It’s not a standalone fix: treatment starts with an evaluation and works alongside diagnostics to address what’s actually driving your symptoms.

TMJ & TMD FAQs

Understanding TMJ & TMD

What is the difference between TMJ and TMD?

TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint itself, which connects the lower jaw to the skull. TMD, or temporomandibular disorder, is the broader term used to describe conditions affecting this joint, the surrounding muscles, and normal jaw function. Because the terms are commonly used interchangeably, many patients simply refer to these concerns as “TMJ.”
TMJ dysfunction can have several underlying causes, including bite misalignment, teeth clenching or grinding, chronic muscle tension, joint inflammation, injury, or excessive strain on the jaw. In some cases, more than one factor contributes to discomfort. At SAMA, a comprehensive evaluation of the bite, jaw movement, and surrounding muscles helps identify what may be driving your symptoms before treatment is recommended.
Symptoms can extend beyond pain directly in the jaw. Patients may experience clicking or popping when opening and closing the mouth, limited jaw movement, facial soreness, tension around the temples, frequent headaches, ear-area discomfort, or difficulty chewing. Clenching and grinding can also contribute to tooth sensitivity, excessive tooth wear, and morning jaw soreness.

How does SAMA evaluate TMJ concerns?

Your evaluation begins with a detailed assessment of how your jaw moves, how your teeth come together, and where muscle tension or tenderness is present. Rather than focusing only on where you feel pain, Dr. Randhawa considers the functional factors that may be contributing to it. This allows treatment to be personalized around the underlying source of dysfunction.
It can. The way the upper and lower teeth come together influences how the jaw joints and surrounding muscles function. When the bite places uneven or excessive stress on these structures, it may contribute to tension and discomfort. Bite function is therefore an important part of SAMA’s TMJ evaluation.
Frequent clenching or grinding can place significant strain on the jaw joints and surrounding muscles. Some people grind their teeth during sleep without realizing it, and morning headaches, jaw tightness, facial soreness, or worn teeth can be important clues. Identifying these patterns can help determine whether an oral appliance or another therapy should be incorporated into the treatment plan.

How is TMJ treated without medication?

Treatment depends on what is contributing to your symptoms. SAMA may incorporate photobiomodulation (PBM), custom oral appliances, bite correction, or other conservative therapies into a personalized plan. The goal is to reduce inflammation and strain while supporting healthier jaw function rather than relying solely on medication to temporarily manage discomfort.
Photobiomodulation is a form of low-level light therapy that delivers targeted light energy to tissues surrounding the jaw. This energy interacts with cellular processes, including mitochondrial activity, to support healing and help reduce inflammation. For appropriate patients, PBM provides a noninvasive, medication-free option that can be incorporated into a broader TMJ treatment plan.
Not everyone with TMJ symptoms needs an oral appliance. For patients who clench or grind their teeth, however, a custom nightguard or splint may help reduce excessive pressure on the jaw joint while protecting the teeth from wear. SAMA determines whether an appliance is appropriate based on your bite, symptoms, and underlying causes of dysfunction.
TMJ care at SAMA is designed to be conservative and comfort-focused. Treatments such as photobiomodulation are noninvasive, while custom appliances are created specifically for your bite. Your treatment plan is tailored to your condition, comfort level, and response to therapy.

How long does it take to see relief from TMJ treatment?

The timeline varies depending on the severity of your symptoms, how long they have been present, and what is causing them. Some patients may begin to notice improvement within the first several treatment sessions, while more complex or longstanding dysfunction may require ongoing care. SAMA monitors your progress and adjusts treatment as your jaw function and symptoms improve.
When headaches are related to jaw tension, clenching, grinding, or overworked facial muscles, addressing the underlying TMJ dysfunction may help reduce their frequency or intensity. Because headaches can have many different causes, a thorough evaluation is important before determining whether jaw dysfunction is contributing to your symptoms.
Clicking and popping can occur for several reasons, so treatment depends on the cause and whether it is accompanied by pain, locking, or limited movement. A comprehensive evaluation can determine whether joint mechanics, bite function, or muscle tension may be contributing and whether treatment is appropriate.
TMJ symptoms can recur, particularly when contributing factors such as clenching, grinding, bite problems, or muscle tension remain present. Long-term management focuses not only on relieving current discomfort but also on reducing the stresses that contributed to the problem. Follow-up care and appropriate maintenance can help support healthier jaw function over time.

When was the last time you heard someone brag about their dentist? Well buckle up – I have a lot to say.

SAMA Oral Health is truly the best dental experience I’ve ever had. Their beautiful & peaceful NYC studio (honestly, a spa) is just the beginning.

As someone passionate about wellness, I love how Dr. Jaskaren and her team put oral wellness first, while using the most advanced tools (like the GBT cleaning machine, which left my teeth feeling insanely clean).

Everyone from Dani at the front to Brianna (the hygienist — ask her about her most recent travels!), to Kayla and Merssy, is kind, professional, and makes you feel totally at ease. It’s rare to find a dental office that feels this chic, relaxing, and high-tech at the same time. I highly recommend SAMA!

–  Rachel W.

Truly appreciate Dr. Randhawa and the entire SAMA health team for quickly getting me for a dental emergency. Everyone there was incredibly concerned for me with my accident, made sure I was taken care, and helped with recommendations for pain gel along with mouth wash to ensure I am as comfortable as possible during the healing the process. I would highly recommend the office as the staff is phenomenal and truly cares for patient wellbeing!

The office is beautiful and calming, the technology is top-tier, and the team goes out of their way to make you feel cared for.
